Did you know that there are no records of Jack Daniel’s actual birthday? The founder of the whiskey company you know and love is thought to have been born sometime in September, so basically you have a whole month to celebrate his birthday… his 160th birthday, to be precise.

This past Wednesday I had a “whiskey emergency”, and wasn’t able to host my radio show. No, I was too busy enjoying a tasting session with Jeff Norman, Jack Daniel’s Master Taster, doing what he does best in the photo above. Jeff took us through three Jack Daniel’s products. Gentleman Jack, the familiar Black Label and Single Barrel.

Did you know that what makes a Tennessee whiskey is the charcoal filtering, and that any charcoal filtered whiskey is automatically a Tennesse whiskey regardless of where it is distilled? Gentleman Jack is the smoothest Jack Daniel’s whiskey, because it is double filtered. Black Label is single filtered, and Single Barrel is distinctive because it is aged longer, and each batch comes from a single barrel selected especially for its flavor.

The tasting session was a crash course, but I’ve taken the intensive class. Five years minus five days ago, I visited the JD distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. It was an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend. It’s difficult to convey how this massive brand, with distribution worldwide, manages to convey the small-town, down-home experience that it clings to in all its advertising and branding. At the time, I assumed that the distillery visit was somehow manufactured, a giant whiskey-making factory disguised as a small family-friendly operation, but as time goes on, I’m less sure. Approximately 300 people work at the distillery, in a town populated by roughly that amount. Those 300 people produce ALL of the Jack Daniel’s consumed worldwide, to the tune of roughly 90 million gallons per year. The math on that is staggering.

Anyways, being the nerd that I am, I brought my “Jack Daniel’s Apprentice Tour Guide” certificate (it arrived in the mail quite by surprise a few weeks after my visit to the distillery) and had Jeff sign it.
