What an untrustworthy looking bunch. From L to R, Lachlan (enjoying the cool underkilt breezes as only a true Scot can), Abby (I think she’s trying to show us something…), me (oops on the scissorfingers, I thought we were going with a gang theme), (yr friendly neighborhood rock critic and beard cultivator) Jonathan Cummins, Omar Goodness (bemused as always) and Mikey from M for Montreal (the next shot involved him spitting beer all over the floor). Ladies and gentlemen, yr lovely host and hostess and merciless judges for CJLO’s first annual Battle of the Bands!
My congratulations to hey predator!, who walked away with the grand prize (2 days of recording time at CJLO studios with our renowned producer David Kunstatter, a feature on CJLO stalwart Hooked on Sonics as well as on the CJLO website, 100$ for gear from Italmelodie, and a 300$ cheque from Scotiabank). Congrats as well to Interracial Love Triangle, who took 2nd and 200$ in gear from Italmelodie, and to runners up Left Side Neighbor, who nabbed 50$ in gear from Boutique Tone.
My thanks to all the bands that came out and competed (I had a ton of fun watching you and I hope it was a worthwhile experience), and to all the attendees, who I hope had as good a time as I did! And of course, my thanks to all the CJLO kids and crew for pitching in and making this happen… you’re the reason I still do this.

don’t forget!

Tonight - first ever CJLO Battle of the Bands! Loyola Campus, in the auditorium under the church (F.C. Smith). Frosty 3$ McAuslan beers start flowing at 6:30, and admission costs 2$, so even the relatively poverty-stricken can afford a good time tonight. The show starts at 7:30 sharp, so don’t wander in late or you’ll miss the first bands, and the biting commentaries by Jonathan Cummins from Mirror mag, Mikey from M from Montreal, CJLO’s own Omar Goodness, and me! I will be available for bribery before the show, so bring those sweet beards and free beers over in my direction, and don’t forget to pick up the latest edition of the CJLO Magazine… if you’re nice I’ll even sign it for ya.

I figured out how to reblog myself. This makes xposting even easier now.
You should come to this. There’s gonna be quality beer at quality prices (3$ a pop for a full selection of St. Ambroise, as well as wine, and dollar sodas and juice), the cover is dirt cheap, there are gonna be door prizes and there’s bound to be at least one band you’ll like enough to cheer for. I am one of the judges (!), along with Jonathan Cummins (Bionic, Doughboys, and rawk critic for Mirror mag), Mikey from M For Montreal, and my boy Omar Goodness (CJLO Head MD and all around good guy). It’s gonna be fun…

Montreal’s own Clever Cupcakes on Kotaku! I know these kids… they cater many of our CJLO events, and are in fact “the official cupcake of CJLO 1690 AM” and therefore know exactly how to appeal to the geek in everyone. Follow the link through to see comic book, tech, QR code, KISS and Super Mario Brothers cupcakes, as well as all the other creative ways they spin sugar and flour into cleverness!

dig on (industrial and/or punk) music?

Tune in to Grade A Explosives RIGHT NOW on CJLO 1690 AM / cjlo.com… it’s an all-industrial special, including an interview with Gen from the Genitorturers!

Also, don’t forget, CJLO punk night is tonight at Katacombes. I’m djing late this time (1-2 am), but I’ll be there earlier for drinks and hangouts.

Catch me again tomorrow morning as I help cohost the CJLO morning show with CJLO’s man on the inside, Karl Knox. I’ll be there as early as possible, which, for the mathematically inclined, means roughly 4 hours of sleep for me tonight… Talkin’ politics and philosophy when sleep deprived? Hell yeah, bring it on. I should be even less filtered than usual.

things i want to do during my week off:

  • listen to shooter jennings’ new album, black ribbons.
  • play the sims 2 compulsively.
  • see alice in wonderland in imax 3d.
  • cohost the CJLO morning show.
  • DJ at CJLO’s punk night.
  • sleep in.
  • have a nice big sunday breakfast.

things i should do during my week off:

  • continue manually stripping the kitchen floor.
  • put a bunch of stuff on craigslist.
  • finally settle on a wireless usb stick/new modem.
  • either fix my broken dvd burner(s), or buy a new one.
  • work on 2 posters, one magazine layout, one ballot layout and one print ad.

things i will probably end up doing during my week off:

  • play the sims 3, wishing it was sims 2.
  • cohost the CJLO morning show.
  • DJ at CJLO’s punk night.
  • sleep in.
  • grudgingly work on 2 posters, one magazine layout, one ballot layout and one print ad.
  • have a nice big sunday breakfast.
