Angelica’s Top 5 Unmissable NYC Eats… in no particular order.
Acme Bar & Grill (9 Great Jones St.) One of my favorite places for Southern/Cajun grub north of the Mason Dixon. Their weekend brunch is ridiculous - chicken fried steak & eggs with fixin’s and a beer and coffee for 11.95! Essential sides: mashed potatoes with gravy, and mac & cheese, or collard greens for the health conscious.
Crif Dogs (113 St. Marks) Best damn hotdogs in the city. Period. My dogs of choice: the Chihuahua and the Spicy Redneck (pictured above, with waffle cheese fries and a frosty PBR), but there’s one to suit all needs. If you’re nice I might even tell you about the speakeasy you can only access through the restaurant…
Lombardi’s (32 Spring) North America’s first (and best) pizza place. Fresh ingredients combine on the perfect pie. Topping suggestions? Meat lovers can’t go wrong with the pancetta and perfect homemade meatballs, and vegetarians won’t lose with ricotta and mushrooms. Relatively inexpensive for very high quality food.
Loreley (7 Rivington) Authentic no-bullshit German food & 1L steins FTW. For dinner I always go for the Schlachtplatte (lit. slaughter plate), but for lunch the Weisswurst reigns supreme. I usually also get an order of Reibekuchen on the side, and don’t forget the freshly baked pretzels with mustard to start!
Trailer Park Lounge & Grill (271 W. 23rd) Come for the kitschy decor, and tasty bad-for-you food, and stay for the two-person margaritas as big as your face. Skip on the tater tots but say YES! to the sweet potato fries, and you can’t miss with the burgers. Keep an eye out for the daily specials, they’re always a great deal.
