So, this full post links to a blog where some self-important fool makes catty comments about the musicians he stalks after shows. I read the whole thing out of curiosity, despite the fact that I couldn’t stop thinking that anyone that this dude thinks is cool and a good conversationalist must be one of those sweet pushovers that lets that one creepy guy yakk their ear off all night… you know who I mean, right? We’ve all met that kid - wannabe powerplayer, autograph hound, tries to force a relationship with every vaguely famous person he’s ever met. Ugh.
Anyways, all of this reminded me of
a) meeting Matt Pike, who is just the most unbelievable spacecase wastoid you’ll ever meet, and yet still a personable guy. Despite everything, I still have an unbelievable crush on him… there’s something weirdly alluring about the whole idiot savant thing he’s got going on
and
b) meeting Mark Morton, quite by accident. After that Slayer/LoG/Mastodon megatour a few years back, on my way home, I bumped into MM, sitting on the curb, inches from the tailpipe of the (running) tourbus, smoking a cigarette. We had a brief chat, and he was polite but very distant, which suited me fine, since all I wanted to do was get a good look and file it away for later…
Unlike metal Perez Hilton, distance is something I respect in people, particularly people that have just gotten off work and want to have a few moments of peace and quiet to have a smoke, call their wife, and check their email. Most bands have “the party guys” and the non-party guys. The party guys will talk to dudes after the show while waiting/hoping for girls/their drug connection to show up. Non-party guys will go back to their hotel rooms and check their stocks/read novels/sleep. It’s just the way of the world.
