evidence of my lame yuppie side on my (gasp!) house blog here.
Rachel’s (309 North Queen Street) Some of the freshest, highest quality food I’ve eaten in the States. I’ll never say no to a plain ol’ Nutella crepe (or two, as is more likely), but when I’m in the mood for something savory, the Philly Cheese Crepe (steak, cheese, mushrooms) can’t be beaten. Drinks-wise, I like the Nutella mocha (hot in winter, blendered into an icy granita in the summer). Summertime is also the season for Rachel’s incredible cold soups… I can taste their green pea soup now.
Columbo’s (1226 Harrisburg Avenue) The stromboli is an American invention. As a half dyed-in-the-wool Italian I’m naturally circumspect when it comes to 2nd generation Italian food. That said, the stromboli at Columbo’s might not have much to do with traditional Italian cooking, but it sure is delicious. Essentially a type of pizza turnover, the key to the excellence of the Columbo’s stromboli is the lack of tomato sauce, which turns what could be just a rolled up ham pizza into a melty, creamy, slightly salty concoction that barely has time to hit the plate before I wolf it down. Get the large to split, you won’t regret it.
Hot Diggity Dog (1325 Fruitville Pike) While this ain’t no Crif Dogs, HDD definitely hits the spot. Pictured is the Moon Dog (melted swiss & strawberry jam - just okay, skip it) and the Texan (chili, cheese, onions & jalapenos - delicious, and highly recommended). The hot dogs are nicely sized and flavorful, but the bun leaves something to be desired. I’d prefer mine grilled, not steamed (bun bread is already flabby and unsubstantial as is), so I’ll definitely see if I can make that possibility a reality next time. Get the dog bowl, ‘cause the fries are great.
Also on my radar:
- Captain Gus for cheesesteaks
- cheap beer, good jukebox tunes and bar food at Brendee’s
- Beanie’s in Mount Joy for wings done almost every way possible
- Neptune’s Diner for gut-busting breakfast
- and the unmissable Waffle House (unsweet tea, hash browns smothered & covered, some kind of Texas melt, and grits with butter, goddamn!)… not a Lancaster exclusive, but I can’t get enough.
Nutella Spooner (via artofdessert)
Some helpful friends have pointed out that today is World Nutella Day. Apparently when I idly consumed half a jar yesterday I was celebrating a bit early… who knew?!
