After a year without playing, I’ve finally gotten The Sims 2 to run again, thanks to a handy-dandy no-cd patch. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it and reading about it over the many past months, but getting to any serious consideration of the game takes careful digging. This article describes a study in which students were asked to play The Sims 2 to see if there is measure by which gameplay can function as an extension of personality, the hypothesis being that perhaps the game could be used as a clinical tool for psychologists. There are definitely some shortcomings to the study, but I’m curious to know if anyone else has picked up where this left off. As the author suggest, it would be interesting to study how “people who have a strong need for control over their lives and social decisions (e.g. choosing which restaurant to go to with a group of friends) may play differently than those who do not have a strong need for control, and locus of control should also be studied”.
